Travelex
Counterfeit Dollars

Business & Finance

The purpose of this postig is to warn people to check the notes, especially the $100 notes that they buy, no matter where they buy it from.

On Sunday 26 May i exchanged rands for US dollars at the Travelex Bureau de Exchange at OR Tambo airport. The total amount bought was about $1750-00, of which most were 100 dollar notes.

Our team of 5 proceeded to Dar Es Salaam where we had to pay $1 250-00 for our Visas that we needed to do work on a gold mine in Tanzania.

All went well until i paid with a 0 bill at the village canteen for goods bougth. Later that evening i was arrested by the head of security. The $100 note was counterfeit. At closer investigation I found that I had 2 more counterfeit dollars in my posession. Luckily I could prove the purchase and the security let me go on a warning after I completed an Affidavit.

Upon my return I went to Travelex and spoke to the manager who, after studying the video footage phoned me to inform me that they will NOT be refunding the counterfeit dollars bought from them. In essence I lost $300.
The worst scenario would be if I get arrested at Dar Es Salaam airport should I visit that country again in July.
