We had a group booking for our international trip in June 2014. One of us had to cancel well in advance as his business circumstances had changed. We, however, have found another person to take his place so we would not need to cancel the flight, but to swap the person's name. Well, that's how you'd expect it to be. There is no swap policy. So, you have to cancel your booking, pay the penalty (1), buy another ticket (more expensively, of course) (2). And if you book, you must pay upfront, but the refund "may take a week or so", so you have to have spare cash to do so (3). At no point in time, the Emirate's staff was willing to assist me to minimize my financial loss, or to wave the penalty, fully or partially. The name change costed me 150USD for 5 minutes of their time. So, to finalise, if you change the name of a person, you will be 3 times.
In conclusion, if you choose Emirates, be prepared to experience intolerance to your circumstances and should you step out by one mm from their way, be prepared to pay and your cheapest airfare will no longer be the cheapest.
P.s. never had such ugly experience with any other airlines despite they also have strict cancellation policy
