11hrs on roadside, Expected to use bush as toilet

Traveling & Tourism

Went on a trip from JHB to Malawi departing Sun 23 June. The bus hit a cow and we ending up spending 4hrs on the roadside. Eventually a replacement bus was sent. We then travelled for 7 hrs when the replacement bus broke down. Passengers then spent a further 7 hrs on the roadside this time waiting while the mechanics worked on the bus. So on this trip passengers spent a total of 11 hours on the roadside. The scheduled time of arrival was 21:30pm in Lilongwe on Monday evening but only arrived on Tues afternoon.
We were told, and I quote using Intercape staff member's exact words, "we should not '' in the toilet on the bus." In spite of this, there were no regular stops at toilets along the way. 6 or 7 hours could pass before the next stop at a toilet. We were told to tell the driver when one needed to go, then the driver would stop alongside the road and you were expected to use the bush. I asked on one occassion for toilet paper and was given some newspaper to use. On another occassion when we were in a built up area I asked for a stop at toilet. I was asked could they stop just outside the city. I told the Intercape employee that I preferred using a toilet rather than the bush
