High latency (lag)

Hello guys, gals.

Why do I forever have high levels of lag (latency) on my internet connection with Telkom?
I hear lots of people talking about 20ms latency yet mine is never less than 200ms and today (16 December 2013) the latency has been nothing less than 600ms the ENTIRE day.

This is not a once-off problem; it happens every single week. It varies from 200 to 2000ms.

This is disgusting as I am not able to use any on line games requiring fast reaction times. I have a 24 month contract and have no idea what to do as I cannot continue paying for this level of poor service.

I have a 4mbps line.
