Subscribing to unknown services

My cell phone number was pulled off a website and used to send me and sms that required me to reply with STOP if I did not want the service.

As I did not subscribe to any service I ignored the request.

As a result, I was subscribed for three or four months to a service that I had to pay for. Also, I received smses (for which I was apparently subscribed) but these were empty - nothing to view.

I believe that this is completely illegal to charge me for something that I did not ask for and because I ignored their request, there policy is that a no-reply is actually a yes.
