1 day old phone broken screen

After multiple tries to obtain a new phone (due to MTN's system being slow or not running at all). I bought a new Sony XPeria Z on 1 October 2013. While in store the assistant put the screen cover on the phone. The phone was then put back in the box. When we took out the phone on the same day the phone was behaving strangely. The touch screen would not work. When I took off the screen cover, I noticed that if you turned the phone at an angle, the screen was cracked. I took it back the next day.

MTN refuses to take the phone back and says that I broke the screen. Now I am stuck with a 1 day old phone that does not work. One would think that after 13 years and multiple phones they would at least try and help me. This is just the latest in a series of issues that leads me to believe that MTN is not a company to do business with.
