I have a cellphone on the MTN network. I recharge between R5.00 and R25.00p/m. In April I loaded airtime and made a call. After the call my balance was about R3.00. I did not use the phone for a few days. When I tried to make a call my balance was R0.00.

I then recharged with R5.00 and made a call. After the call my balance was R4.00. I did not use the phone again for a few days. When I checked my balance I found it was R0.00 again!

My first guess was one of these "subscriber" companies. I phoned MTN customer care and asked if they could tell me where the airtime was being spent. MTN checked my record and identified the problem. I was shocked at their reply.

MTN told me that my airtime "expires" if it is not used for a few days!!!

This is my airtime. I pay for it with my own money. What right do they have to "expire" my airtime as they choose? Networks give free airtime when a subscriber recharges. They have the right to "expire" the free airtime as it belongs to them. They have issued it free to the subscriber.

But the airtime I paid for is mine. They can't "expire" this airtime. It belongs to me not to them. They are something that I paid for. That is criminal
