Billed 5 years late

I had a Planet Fitness contract in 2008. I then notified the consultants that I was pregnant and would like to cancel. They asked me to do this in writing, which I did. My debit order stopped running and I didnt hear anything from them again. Now, March 2013, I have started to receive calls from Beverley of Saya Recoveries saying that I owe R16 000??? Furthermore, I am being harrassed on my work line (our calls are recorded), and when I try to tell her that our calls are recorded and audited, she tells me that I had better make an arrangement because of the company I work for and that I would be handed over to the legal department. Furthermore, Beverley stated that my contract ended in May 2011. When I told her that I should have been called in 2008 and not in 2013, she suggested I call the Bedfordview branch. Within an hour of the call Beverley called me back to say that I was in "big trouble" as Planet Fitness was still billing me and I now owe R22 000. She asked me to send a letter asking for my contract to be cancelled. Why am I now being harrassed after 5 years? And how can a bill go from R16 000 to R22 000 in an hour? I cancelled and nobody bothered to call me for 5 years?
