Shoprite
Expiry dates on packages

Good day
I've noticed that my local shoprite repackages things when/on the day that they expire, gives them a new sell-by date even though on the original packaging the product is expired. This is mostly done with the mushrooms, peppers, potatoes and coliflower.
i want to know why shoprite would sell food that is expired (even if it is at a lower price) rather than donate it to a food kitchen or sell it a few days early at a lower price.
isnt there some kind of consumer law that prohibits this?
