Can't return defective product

I just had an extremely frustrating experience at Game. The staff, while very friendly, were not at all helpful.

I was trying to return a vacuum cleaner that I purchased about three weeks ago. The very first time I tried to use this machine I discovered small plastic supports inside the machine were broken off and missing, so I packed everything neatly back in the box.

Today I finally had time to return it. I showed the staff the problem. I also showed them that the machine is effectively unused. I showed them the accessory bags that have not even been opened. But still they refused to refund me, insisting that because the purchase was more than two weeks ago, it can only be sent away for repairs.

Where did this two week limit come from? What happened to the six months provided for in the consumer protection act? I don't want this product because it is obviously of very poor quality.

I am very disappointed with Game for stocking such a poor quality product, and even recommending it to me, yet not willing to accept it back when it is clearly defective.
