Closed account handed over for R400.00

I received a call from the attorneys advising that they are collecting on behalf of Edgars stores. I contacted edgards call centre to enquire what nonsense is this. I spoke to an incompitant call centre agent who was so rude and had no manners. He advised me that my account was handed over, however he could not give me the details of why, I asked for the manager and I was put on hold for an hour. Finally I dropped as no one came to the phone to speak to me. He told me that the account they referring to was openned 1997. I had an account when I was still in tertiary however i paid it up and closed the account at one of the branches in Pretoria. I had no letters or any calls advising that the account is still owing, which it could be strange as no account can be closed with outstanding balance. Until today from 13th when I made the enquiry.
