Apple iPhone deletes contacts!

I am not alone in experiencing this undocumented feature where my iPhone randomly deletes all my contacts from my phone. Upon trying to speak to Apple about it, I'm charged $19 for a support call! Surely a "leader in innovation" should be willing to advise - even in an FAQ format - a solution to this problem that seems to be plaguing so many users. I for one, am very close to hanging up the Apple Coat and switching to something that is more reliable.
