Business & Finance

Can a client expect loyalty from his bank, or is the bank only interested in its own profits? I joined Volkskas in Sept 1966 - 47 years ago. In 1974 I became a free-lance actor, director, etc. (40 years). I have since bought 6 houses, 12 cars, 2 boats, etc. via ABSA withou a hiccup. Currently I own every brick in my house, my cars and studio equipment. I am not a rich man - assets of R3.5 million and a platinum client. (!) Now clients not paying or going belly-up - havoc in your cash flow. I thought I could reinstate my flexi-bond, which I had 2 years ago. "Not on your life! You're a free-lance! You have no fixed income! " As I pointed out that I have been a free-lance for 40 years, and it has never bothered them, they became schtumm, looking at the floor. Whatever the reason for ABSA's recalcitrance in my case, I feel that over 47 years they have made a packet from me, what with some of the reportedly highest banking fees in the world. Am I na? ve to expect a little more respect from them? A little show of loyalty? Possibly. Banking is not about customers or clients anymore - it is about making more money and profits. That, I suppose, is unbridled capitalism. Nic de Jage
