Passport problems

I applied for a new passport this week after I got marries only to get a phone call from my local Home affairs office stating that they can't process my document because my previous passport was not collected from home affairs in Cape Town in 2010. The only problem is that I am sitting with the passport in my hand and have been abroad with it a few times in the last three years. When trying to phone the department to sort out the problem they refuse to take calls after two days of trying there is just no answer. Then when I phoned the customer care line they told me that I have to go in to the department where I applied for my previous passport to sort out the mess. The only problem is that I don't live anywhere near Cape Town anymore.
