Transfering ticket to other use

I booked a ticket on line. And had to cancel the ticket. And found out if I could transfer the ticket to another user as the airline is able to do it once the ticket is cancelled. I found out that we are unable to do it and the airline does not fascilitate the transfer. But if I cancel they will resell the ticket and get a double fee for the ticket. I find this highly unfair.
