Vodacom
Cancellation of Contract

I am going on expatriation on a 3 year assignment to Europe. I contacted Vodacom contracts cancellation 0821958, to request a cancellation fee. I took out my contract in Jan 2012 Blackberry 9900 & paid in over R2000 in order to get the phone on a talk 240. At the time my daughters phone was due for renewal, but as she does not qualify for a Blackberry 9900, the salesmen advised & convinced me to take the phone on my contract, although my phone was only due for renewal in Oct 2012. The salesman advised it was not a problem & i cld do a pre-upgrade. On trying to cancel my contract I Got told my contract is only due for cancellation in Jan 2015. I got told that they added the additional months from the old contract to the new and a few months xtra as penalty! How can this be? To cancel my contract would cost me R7000??? For a migration until the contract expires in Jan 2015 is R3200. How do companies like Vodacom get away with this? Section 14 of the consumer protection act states that a maximum a contract can be fixed is 24 months, this is now 36months?
it further states that 20 days notification must be given. Consumer is liable for a Reasonable cancellatio??? charge
