Battery exploded in phone

In August 2012 I bough a cellphone contract from Autopage for my son which included a Blackberry Curve 9380 phone. In February 2013 the battery exploded inside the phone while it was on charge with the original supplied battery and charger. The phone was handed in at Autopage for repairs but has since been returned as uneconomical top repair. Although the phone is less than 6 months old and the damage was obviously caused by faulty equipment (battery or charger), Autopage refused to replace the unit, stating that the damage was due to overcharging. I have had cell phones for more than 10 years and has never had one exploded while charging, even when I leave it overnight on the charger. My question is how is it possible to overcharge a phone using the supplied charger and battery. The phone in question is less than 6 months old, still under warranty and because the damage was caused by faulty equipment and not user negligence, I feel strongly that Autopage should replace the phone or if not, at least cancel the contract in order for him to get a new contract and phone.
