Shocker from MTN - not releasing number for port

Having cancelled my contract with MTN earlier this week, I was assured by the consultant at MTN Canal Walk that my number would be released for porting to Vodacom (as the contract had expired a few weeks ago, there would be 'no issue'). No big surprises when this did not happen and I am now told my Vodacom that they cannot port the number because it has 'not been released by MTN'. To add insult to injury, the so-called 'porting departments' of MTN and Vodacom keep strict weekday hours and NODODY at MTN can resolve the issue until the elusive 'porting department' returns to work. The net result is that I can't get my Vodacom phone or contract working because MTN has failed to do the necessary admin on their side. It remains a mystery to me why it should take a technology company several days to execute a simple, automated task like porting a telephone number. Perhaps it suits all of the big telecoms companies to drag their heels on porting our numbers in order to discourage people from switching between networks?
