High Data rates and no cleint support

Cell (0827755601) contract expired Sept. 2013. 9 Dec 2013 my wife were informed that it can immediately be cancelled or upgraded to a data package. After confirmation on 10 Dec 2013, with the understanding that the transfer is immediate I upgraded to data package (Previously a weekender type package). I understood that upgrade cost and 1st data account to be received at end of
Jan 2014; it will reflect the change and be higher than normal account - it will reflect the pro rata cost for Dec 2013 (contract signed 10 Dec 2013 - not on 1). I received wifi modem with 7 day exchange warranty.
From 10 Dec I was not able to make phone calls. I received SMS's indicating contract extension to 10/12/2015. Date made sense for 2 year contract.
Monthly payment is R99 for 2 gb top up. I received an account for R3 769.81 and informed that contract only started 01/01/2014 and I am liable for payment. On 17/01/2014 complain were logged - EC-0O8P-3PUSYB. I requested time frame but to date not informed, I asked it be resolved not later than 22/01/2013 - yet no response received.
If I had any doubt in my mind that the contract was not immediately active, I would have cancelled existing contract.
