Mystery debt with Virgin Mobile

I had a contract with Virgin Mobile that ended in 2010. As the account was paid by debit order and the debit orders stopped at the right time I assumed that my non-renewal with Virgin Mobile had been successful and never gave it another thought.

Then, two weeks ago I apply for a home loan, safe in the knowledge that my credit record is blemish free. But this was not to be. My credit record shows an amount of R930 owed to Virgin and written off as bad debt. How? If the account was paid via debit order, surely I would simply have been debited for this amount?

I ported my number from Virgin to Vodacom. I was never notified that I owed them money. My e-mail address is also the same and nowhere is there any mention of the fact that I have outstanding payments. I have tried the call centre, but they have been unable to help me. I have e-mailed Virgin and have not been shown the courtesy of a reply. I went into a store and was told they can't help me as my account no longer exists.

So I have a bad credit record because of mysterious debt that I didn't know about. At this point I am even willing to pay the money just to clear my name.
