Unpleasant surprise on first bill

This is more for the sake of other prospective users than out of any hope of having the issue resolved. I opened a new contract for my and my wife's phones with Telkom Mobile on the 20th of December. We both took their Galaxy S4 on Smartplan 100 as it was and still is a pretty good deal. I was told that we would be paying pro-rata for the first month and the full amount after that until the end of the contract. I have just received the invoice in which I am being charged pro-rata for everything except the devices themselves, which are being billed from the first of the month. I phoned the customer care line and was told that that's simply how the billing works. This preferential pro-rata results in my bill being approximately R331 more than I was expecting and budgeted for. I don't mind paying for services rendered but I was not informed that the billing works in this manner. Every other contract I've ever had was charged pro-rata on the full amount, not just part of it so this was quite a shock. It's my first cellular contract so I don't know if they all work like this but I didn't appreciate the surprise or the "tough that's how it works" response from customer care.
