Vodacom
Warranty avoidance

I dropped my daughters blackberry 9300 off at Cresta Vodacare so that the trackpad could be fixed. She had only had this phone for five months so it was still under warranty. After a couple of weeks (which I had spent chasing up the progress of this phone) I was informed that there was water damage and as such they would not fix this under the warranty. My options were to pay R1000 plus VAT and I would be given a refurbished phone. I declined this. Subsequently I took the phone to a reputable company whom fix cell phones. It turns out that there was no water damage whatsoever - in fact they couldn't believe that I had even been told so but did mention that Vodacom are 'known' for this particular tactic so that they do not have to fix under warranty. In a nutshell I paid R350 and the phone is working 100%. Now had I taken up Vodacom's offer, they would have fixed it for less than that and would be making say R800 or so PROFIT per phone as it would then have been sold as a refurbished phone to the next unsuspecting person. This is shocking!!! So much for a 2 year warranty.
