I have just received a Vodacom invoice charging me over 200 times my usual monthly usage. The culprit? Data Roaming charges to the tune of R23, 000.00, charged at R128 per mg. I agreed to roaming over 5 years ago, travel abroad extensively and have never had issues before. However on this occasion charges equates to over -12, 800 times- the local data rate. Vodacom never made me aware nor did they attempt to make me aware of this exorbitant charge. Similarly I receive no communication from Vodacom to query the unusual usage. The stock standard response of "client responsibility to check a login protected charge sheet somewhere on a website" is not a good enough.
I am reasonable enough to assume roaming charges would be higher (not 12800x high) but if Vodacom would like to lose a client of 10 years with more than 5 contracts ignore this post.
On a similarly note I will be contacting both the consumer ombudsman and ICASA with regards to this matter.
