How did I spend R80 when my data was off?

Yesterday I was on the phone to Vodacom Call Centre Agents, migrating my contract to a smaller package as I can no longer afford my current plan. While making toll-free calls, I somehow increased my bill by R50. Being concerned about this, as I can not afford to pay the bill as it is, I called Vodacom again, and spoke to a very unhelpful woman who got offended when I told her that I could not have used R50 on data and such during the calls, as my phone was on wifi with data off, completely. When I asked her about other possibilities, she just got more upset with me, so I gave up. After the phone call, I decided to download an app that would monitor my data usage, just in case it was my phone somehow getting onto the net. Before I went to sleep, I switched off data COMPLETELY and turned on wifi. This morning I woke up with a bill of R500!! (R80 more than last night) I checked the app, and while it detects data used over wifi, it detects NO data usage by my phone, using my Vodacom account, AT ALL.
I cannot afford to pay this bill as it is, and now I see that Vodacom is squeezing me for every cent before my contract changes to a Top Up. I CAN NOT PAY THIS BILL, AND I WON'T. Fix it.
