MIS-COMMUNICATION - PORTING OF NUMBER

I have recently opened a new contract with MTN, when the istore was having a special with the iphone 5.

My previous contract was with Virgin Mobile, which I have cancelled and have been waiting to port my number to my new contract.
When i asked at the istore, I was told this can be done. I have had my number for many years - originally from MTN, and all my contacts have this from banks, schools, on my business cards.
I went into the MTN shop The Glen, and was just told told sorry it can't be done, the reason being i have an open contract already and it should have been done when i took out the new contract. This was never relayed to me.
The other situation is the number I have been given by MTN is actually a recycled number, no -one has this number as i was waiting for the porting to be done, so have never given it out. I receive calls and sms on a daily basis asking for someone else. MTN said this evening they can give me another number if that is the case. Which I find unbelievable, they can give me another but not port my other number.
I need a solution to this. I would never have taken the contract out if I had been told this in the first place, and get this so called service
