Handed over for Collection for a closed account

Opened an account with Telkom in May 2012, for an ADSL line. Then decided I would rather go with 8ta, so cancelled the account with Telkom (withing 1-2 weeks of opening the account). Did not receive a single statement or any notification that I needed to pay Telkom. To my understanding and from what I was told, the account was closed and I owed Telkom nothing.
Got a call mid 2012 from debt collectors, regards an out standing bill. I informed them that I had cancelled the account and nothing was owed. Was informed that the collectors would resolve the issue. Again assumed that the issue had been resolved.
Got another call from debt collectors on the 14th June 2013 informing me that I now owe R900. A year later and I havent received any notification that I owed Telkom money. Phone Telkom directly to resolve the issue. Informed them that I had not received a single statement or request for payment. The answer I get "We apologize for the inconvenience". So now in essence I have a tarnished credit record and owe R900 to Telkom for an account that was never used.
