Damaged Sony Experia cell phone irrepairable

I had my 4-month old Sony Xperia cell on my lap in the car, phoning around for alternate accommodation after being hoaxed through a website for the long Easter weekend accommodation. I forgot that my cell was on my lap and I got out of the car, my Xperia slipped off my lap onto a gravel driveway face downwards. When I picked it up, the whole screen had cracked. This Xperia is supposed to be scratch and shockproof and water resistant, etc. I then took it to my MTN service provider the next working day. They sent it in for repairs only to tell me 2 weeks later that if they repair the screen, it would cost me R5000-00. Or, purchase another Xperia for R2500-00? I would like to know why there are no guarantees to fall back on when Sony claims that the Xperia to be so great. I can't believe the damage to my phone just from falling off my lap onto gravel! I personally think that the glass wasn't toughened, therefore scratched and broke so easily. I know of others who also have the same phone, screen broken. Why? I am an estate agent, I use my cellphone daily and it is seen by many clients. I have been asked why my phone is in such bad condition. When I tell them, they are shocked.
