I took out the membership in 2007

I took out the membership in 2007 with Virgin Active Southgate branch.
I went to gym about once of which was my own fault not going back thereafter. I then received news that I need to go to the USA for 2 years, arranged with my Mother that we transfer the account to her name as she will then make payment basically she will then became the member.
Not so long after taking out the membership with Virgin Active I called them to advise and they plain down refused the offer and told me lots of nonsense about being able to use my membership that side and all that and me knowing that for a few months I will not be able to pay the account. I then asked if I could cancel the account and they then told me about settlement fees and all that of which I did not have. Years went by not hearing from them and all of a sudden like a bomb I get a call from MBD (legal services) about a virgin active account. They then corner you so that you get scared and start paying where you can. After having a long thought about this Virgin active account I realized that I did not receive one letter from them nor a reminder that the account is overdue.
I find it rather messed up.
