No card because of expired drivers license

I wanted to purchase an item on my account at Foschini in Centurion but have misplaced my card. This has not been a problem at any of the other branches as all I have required was my drivers license (ID number), However here it was a problem. I was asked if I would like a replacement card which I said yes to. My ID book was requested but I only had my drivers license (not sure why an ID book is necessary if we all carry our licenses with us). After going through the whole process I was told that due to the fact that my drivers license had expired they were unable to issue me with a new card, never mind that I am waiting for my new license card and could provide the receipt / proof thereof. I would like to know what on earth the expiry date on my drivers license has to do with my Foschini account?!

I won't even go into how unimpressed the teller seemed to be when she realised she had a customer to assist...
