Independent Newspapers
Debtor's reconciliation unsatisfactory

Once again my 6 monthly subscription to the Cape Argus newspaper fell due on 2 April 2013. One is advised in the reminder that payment should be made at least 5 days before expiry date. So, on 26 MArch 2013, I transferred electronically the amount required into the newspaper's bank account, quoting the correct reference numbers.

Lo and behold, the chap delivering our daily paper tells me on 3 April 2013 that, according to his list, my subscription was cancelled! I telephoned the local Argus office, to be told that they had only just been credited with my subscriptions, and that normal service would be resumed on 4 April.

This happens every time I renew my subscription. According to my bank, payments to other banks will be credited by midnight the day following day if made after 16h00. That would have been 26 March 2013. Still well before the 5 days stated on their reminder letter. I think it's time that the paper employs staff that know what they are doing, instead of using a call centre that tries to wave off your complaint by saying "It's all fixed now."
