New replacement cartridges were empty

In September 2013 I bought spare cartridges for my SodaStream machine and when the first one was finished I tried to replace with a spare to find that the fitting did not fit, the same was found on the 2nd spare cartridge. I returned the cartridges and the shop replaced all 3 with no charge for the 2 that did not fit. I installed one cartridge and all was OK, this weekend the cartridge was empty and after fitting a spare one found that despite it being shrunk wrapped it was empty, the same happened to the second spare. I lodged a complaint on the sodstream website but have received no response.
The question that I am asking is how it is possible that the cartridges were not used but became empty, was the problem with the filling process or was there a leaking seal that caused the gas to escape in the 6 weeks that they were stored
