I applied to have my wife added as a beneficiary to my Discovery Classic medical aid plan. I have been quoted an addition to my premium of R.3000.00. She is at this time on her own Discovery plan. I was called this morning to say that to move her off her own policy on to my policy is considered by Discovery as an 'upgrade' and this can only be done by back dating her addition to my plan to 1 January. I will have to pay her additional premium for Jan. They will not refund the premium on her own policy that she has paid for January. The alternative is for her to resign her membership as of end Jan and I add her as a beneficiary as at 1 March. There has to be a break in her cover to do this so I cant add her from 1 Feb. I am extremely unhappy with this situation as there is no logic to it, I am being 'punished' for wanting to pay Discovery an additional R.3000.00 per month. It especially irks as the only explanation that I have been given is that 'those are the rules'. Surely as easily as Discovery can make their own rules they can make their exceptions.
