Claims on Keycare

I have been on Discovery Key care for about 2 years.

Never have I used any of my benefits except doctor's visits & the occasional dentist visit.
I went to see a specialist on Tuesday for the first time. Unaware of the ridiculous procedure you have to go through just to see a specialist. I was told to make payment at the time from my own pocket which I did and then claim it back from discovery. Upon accessing the progress of my claim I received this message: We have not paid this amount because you need to get a reference number from us before you visit a specialist.

Please help me understand the following...
If you have selected a doctor from the list, reference number or not... Whats the difference between getting the reference first or in my case backdating it??

I am a part time student and I do not have the finances just to give out R1130 as I please.
I phoned discovery and asked them for assistance where to the response was there is nothing I can do.

I refuse to accept this and I want my claim processed. What is the use in having medical when all you do is pay pay pay and you do not receive any assistance in return.

I am aggravated beyond return!
