On 18 May 2018 I test drove a Renault Captur at McCarthy Renault Woodmead and I quested a quote on 21 May 2018 and based on the price of R 326 435.40(incl VAT), I requested finance. The dealer indicated that only MFC was prepared to finance the vehicle as I was providing quite a large deposit - R130k on R326k purchase price (note that I did not receive any notifications from any banks indicating that they are requesting bank statements). MFC indicated a 12.83% interest, which is quite high but as no other bank provided an offer I indicated that this was fine. When my husband (who was managing the car buying process) requested a detailed breakdown of the quote and instalment, we discovered that numerous additional policies (worth R 9000) was added. These were added without explaining what they were or requesting my consent to add them to my financing cost. My husband demanded they remove these policies and the instalment dropped by R300 per month.
We paid over the deposit and was promised that I would receive my car on Saturday 26 May 2018. In fact, Clinton (the dealer manager) told my husband that the car would arrive from Durban on the Thursday or Friday latest. On xx Clinton told my husband that the car has been already been loaded on the truck. On Friday at 11:27 we received an email that I can pick up my car on Saturday between 12:00 and 13:00. Then at 13:38 all of a sudden the car won't be available on Saturday, but only on Monday. We indicated that this was not acceptable compared to what was promised. Shane (the car salesman we have been dealing with) indicating that they are talking to the delivery guy and will try to have the car there on Saturday morning still. He will let us know on Saturday morning. We received no feedback on Saturday and when we phoned the dealer at about 12:00 to find out where the truck was, Shane indicated that the truck probably left Durban at 08:00 on Saturday morning (he wasn't sure), so I would able to collect my car Monday morning at 07:00 as he would keep the mechanic late on Saturday to complete the tests before releasing the car. We told him this was not acceptable and to refund the deposit. Shane confirmed that this will be done on Monday morning.
To cover ourselves my husband also sent an email on Saturday evening indicating our decision as such. Note that I have not signed anything. On Monday 14:28 they requested my husband completed a form and provide his ID number as the deposit would be paid in his account. My husband returned the completed form at 15:49 on Monday. Following up with Shane on Tuesday, he indicated he did not receive the form. My husband resent the form on Tuesday afternoon 17:29. My husband followed up if Shane received the form on Wednesday morning at 06:14. Shane indicated telephonically that we would receive proof of payment by 15:00. During a telephone conversation at 15:20 Shane said that the payment has been made, he is just waiting for the proof of payment. Then at 17:09 Shane replied that they need a copy of my husband’s ID as well. I am still waiting for my money that they are illegally withholding.
