My money and I waiting in syspense

In October last year I released funds from a policy to pay as much of my accounts off as possible and my ABSA credit card was one of them. I called the call centre and asked for the settlement amount for my credit card. I was given the amount and told to pay it into my credit card directly. This was done and settled on 24 October 2012 after which I never again received a call, a sms, a statement or email, which is what the accounts department do relentlessly if you owe them money. It is now April 2013 and out of the blue Newtons Attorneys call me to say I have been handed over for this account. When I supplied them proof of payment I told them that it was settled already. Today the lawyers office calls me to say they found my payment - it was sitting in a syspense account. Even though I paid it into my credit card account, which is in my name? Why did the bank not ever call to ask me about the money they "did not" receive? Surely I would have had endless threats by now for "non payment"? Now the lawyers tell me I must pay the interest on the account & lawyers fees! Really! And the cherry on top, they have no record of me ever calling the call centre, NO Notes! Who are you people?!
