Ridiculousness of Finrite

I have insuring 3000 insurance on my autopage contract. finrite the insurer approved my claim for lost phone. i have requested that they allow me to choose a different phone and i am prepared to pay the difference. i am insured for R3000 and the new phone is R3800. a difference of R800. they say i have to take the phone they give me. what is the difference. i am paying the shortfall. My wife recently claimed from another insurer, paid the difference, all without any hassle, as have i, 2 years ago when i claimed from the same insurer. I find this bizarre.
