Sanlam does u-turn and pays out 10% of medical cos

In June 2012, my mother was admitted to Vergelegen Mediclinic, Somerset West in extreme pain. I was working in Lesotho at the time and received a phone call at 6pm asking if I could pay the R20 000 deposit required to admit my mother into the hospital, to which I agreed. In fact, she was operated on that very evening as she had picked up an infection which had to be cut out. My mother had a One Medical Policy at Sanlam, which had paid for 3 major operations before. I contacted them the next morning to find out the procedure. I told them that I did not know what was wrong with my mother, but that it was serious. I was told not to worry, that I should forward all the invoices to Sanlam once my mother was discharged and they would sort it from there. My mother needed 2 further emergency operations and was held in intensive care for 5 days. The surgeons could do no more and she passed away 7 days later in hospital. The last policy statement stated that there was R370 000 available for "major medical benefits". The medical bills came to nearly R300 000. Sanlam then wrote back, saying the operation wasn't covered in the policy and paid out less than R30 000.
