I went into the Selcourt Towers Standard Bank to close a student achiever account which I have not used in months (possibly years). When I got to the teller I was informed that I can close the account once I pay the bank the money that I "owe" them, I was shocked as I was never aware of owing Standard Bank at all! I asked if someone can tell me where this negative value came from, I was told that Standard Bank would make an internal enquiry on the matter and get back to me within 2 working days -they never got back to me- on the 10 June I called the call centre trying to follow up on the matter, I was then sent a statements showing what looks like bank charges (service fees) which have been charged every month and has now accumulated. I am shocked at this as I was not aware that banks charge fees (service fees) on accounts that have not been used for months, I was also never informed by Standard Bank that this was happening until I went in to close the account! I still want to close the account but I refuse to pay for this! It is not fair! Terrible service.
